GE 2011
2011 General Elections are over. Personally I think they should make the day after polling day a "Cooling off" day too.
Haha, not being serious there.
Perhaps its because I'm 5 years older as compared to the last GE, or maybe its because I'm so saturated with GE news from the online social sites (i.e Facebook and all) that I'm actually seriously thinking about SG politics. I would just like to add that its not just me. My friends and classmates are also abnormally hyped up about who's running for candidacy and who's not.
Perhaps its time to consider that Singaporean youths are not politically apathetic.
This GE was a watershed in certain ways and not in others. Well, for one, for the first time, the opposition has won a GRC. Like wow, they actually won a GRC. They managed to clinch Hougang SMC too. It was rather an eye-opener to actually see PAP losing by so much (through Hougang's vote counts). Then, Potong Pasir is now under PAP. I always don't think much of fielding one's spouse to 'replace' one's political spot, but I don't know much about Mr Chiam See Tong's situation, so I shall not comment. But seriously, the difference was just 114 votes?! That's just too close for comfort for both the opposition and the ruling party.
Oh right, and then, there was online media. I'm starting to think that Facebook is a very scary place. About and hour or so after the first results for Mountbatten(?) was announced, I saw that my friend shared a page: Yah Ah Mee. That's the name, by which most netizens know, of the Returning Officer Extraordinaire, Yam Ah Mee.
It was quite funny in a cute way how he announced the results: probably because it was in such an impractical and monotone-ish manner hahaha x)
he garnered like 20k 'like's overnight, in a span of a few hours.
The power of social media is not to be underestimated.
This is probably true for the case of Tin Pei Ling. The amount of negative comments and articles on her during the elections was amazing. Though I don't really think that well of her because of all these talk going around, i was reminded to look at what she did, can and will promise to do in the future. Singaporeans should also try to look further and evaluate her properly after she begins her office. Maybe her talent would shine?
Well, then GE 2011 also showed us how dirty and petty SG politics can be. I saw a photo of Mr Chiam's Meet-the-people session office and I was just thinking, 'what?'
It was just a tiny place in the void deck of a HDB bordered up by metal boards. There, that box is your office. Shouldn't Singaporeans be priority regardless of which party one is in?
So why are areas represented by the opposition always placed at a lesser priority?
Its just petty, really.
GE2011 also saw PAP's popularity dip to a low of 60.1%...This can really be seen from the proportion of votes they are getting. Some SMCs and GRCs have really close fights.For Marine Parade GRC, opposition has managed to secure like 43% of the votes. Despite the fact that it was SM Goh who was leading the team.
I'm having a withdrawal from all these politics. Now that PAP has won as usual, majority of parliament, I think its time for Singaporeans to see whether all the promises made during election will be fulfilled. Will housing prices go down? Will there be less immigrants? Will there be a better, less rigid education for our students? Will cost of living become too much?
All of these and a lot more social problems are waiting to be answered...and as part of the population who will be voting for the next GE, I think I should start assessing, today.
